Day 35–Addis Ababa

Sleep-ins are so rare that they are to be treasured whenever we get a chance. It was great to have a bit of a slower start to the day, with no major agenda. John headed off around 9:30 to try and get one of his bags fixed, and the rest of us got on with washing clothes, cleaning bikes, etc. Shan and I planned to leave at around 10:30 to have a look at one of the museums, but due to several delays (uh-hummm, old men), we ended up leaving at around 12:30. The drive through town was nice, if a little chaotic, and we eventually arrived at the Ethnological museum located at the city’s university. It was a fascinating insight into the country and the culture, although it was a bit disturbing to see how many of the paintings involved violent executions. Afterwards, we went for a late Day 35 (Addis Ababa) 2012-02-02 160 (461x640)lunch at the “Lucy Lounge and Restaurant” in honour of Lucy, one of the oldest hominid specimens ever found. We headed home to start fiddling with the bikes, and found that Shan’s choke cable had snapped, which is not absolutely essential that it be replaced, but it may cause some problems in some of the colder countries. Over a delicious supper of roast chicken, we talked about some of the history of the country, as well as some of the disturbing international developments, such as the increased tensions in Syria, and the closing of the Turkey/Iran border. Nothing we can do about that at this stage, but we may need to start thinking about alternative routes around that area.

A request. As you may have noticed, we are severely restricted in our internet access. If anyone hears any news about either of those situations, please send us a message at 4bikes4singapore@gmail.com. We would really appreciate it.

  1. I am sure you have probably heard that Russia and China vetoed any action by the UN in Syria. So Assad has set his thugs loose, looks like civil war may develop. Not a very good sign for travel throughout Syria. In addition to that things are deteriorating with Iran and it looks like Israel might attack at any time. It might make more sense to take a boat from Egypt to Cyprus, then into Turkey and north of the Caspian Sea through the Stans. Nothing looks particularly safe after that. Afghanistan and Pakistan are a mess, not sure you can go through Western China and into Nepal. Indian will seem like a safe haven once you get through those countries. This is going to be a real adventure! Of course you could choose to go right up through nice safe Europe but that would probably seem boring!

Even if you are faking this whole thing in a hanger in Nevada its still amazing and very inspiring. Carry on. I will go and add some excitement to my life now. It will start with pancakes, but I’m taking my passport in case things get out of hand.
