THIS BLOG CHRONICLES A FAMILY MOTORCYCLE TRIP FROM CAPE TOWN TO SINGAPORE, FROM JANUARY TO APRIL 2012. THE GROUP COMPRISES MAL, SON JULIAN, DAUGHTER SHANNON, AND JOHN

The Bikes

We are all riding KLR 650’s, John’s being a green 2008 model, Mal’s a 2007 is gray like his hair with some yellow racing stripes, unlike his hair!  Jules and Shan are riding red 2005 and 2004 respectively.  We chose these bikes for their simplicity, reputation of reliability, and cost effectiveness.  We continue to hear of riders who rate them highly.  Time will tell.  Everyone gets to love their own bike, and defend it to death!!

  1. Hi Malcolm,

    I love your site!
I have a Yamaha Tenere XT 600, 1992 model and I am embarking on a 50 day ride from Nairobi to Cairo from 12th December 2013 to 31st January 2014.
We are calling it the Jubilee Ride to celebrate 50 years of our independence as Kenya.

    Hey Malcolm,

Stumbled accross your site and journey. Goto do something about those punctures though – they look like a serious pain in a place that you can’t fix!

It is really great that you can do this with your kids – although John probably doesn’t qualify!

We also have KLR’s, and would love to tackle a trip like this one day.

    Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

HI Mal. Good luck on your trip !!!! sounds awesome! i have read long way down and long way round and this is a great love of mine …. biking!!!!
i have a 1983 Tenere XT 600 and have just come back from a 9 day trip through Lesotho ( 15 of us went ….. was very off road trip through many dodgy passes the worst being old mill route from lesotho into clarens… a good skill tester) loved every minute.
As a chiropractor i had many oppotunities to help along the route ( 13 of the 15 fell !)
but of all the bike ( KTM 990s, 960s, 690s, BMW 800 GS s ) i was most impressed with the 3 smaller ones ie KLR 650 , XR 660 and my trusted steed!
tight lines and have a blast
